It takes a village to build a Village. There are many models on how to build an ecovillage, ranging from gathering the right people and buying land to build it out of pocket, to paying professionals to do everything for you, and every possible model or methods in between. There are ecovillages that provide housing as rentals, homeownership, co-housing/co-ownership, and/or condo style, for example. Building them can be daunting, and expensive.

If you need a guide and help on the ‘how-to’ part of this process, then we can help. Finding funders is only part of the process, appying to them is another, while creating reports after the work is done is a final step. Many documents and research need to take place regarding the location of your ecovillage, as well as forming ideas into plans. The steps are below.

First, form your organization and produce all of the necessary documents. This includes the by-laws, policies, and others. This phase also includes capacity building for your Board of Directors and/or membership.

Planning your ecovillage takes careful consideration, as well as partners who will support your endeavour. Certain requirements fall into place here, which includes the buildings themselves, the grounds, and any documents necessary to get the job done.

Pre-development includes the professional companies necessary (or required by the province, Codes, and/or governmental funders), documents, land survey, and infrastructure prior to building the village. The funders will require a number of things from your organization.

This is the step you have been waiting for and preparing for--actually building (developing) your ecovillage. Construction by a professional licensed builder and having a Project Manager will be essential during this process. All your ducks must be in a row.

PAST & CURRENT PROJECTS
Our current project is Edgewood Ecovillage, which is in the "Planning" stage in Pubnico, NS (Yarmouth county). This village will have 20-30 sustainable affordable housing (rental) units for ages 50+.

Another ecovillage (not ours) is Treehouse Village Ecohousing, located in Bridgewater, NS (Lunenburg county). Our Project Manager (pre-construction) is Murray Tate with Tate Engineering, who also built Treehouse Village.
